History
So far we have found evidence that the Whaup was in existence as far back as 1851 when Mr. Alexander Campbell was the landlord, although we believe the building to be much older. It is also thought that the row of buildings that the Whaup is part of, used to be owned by Barnbarroch Estate as there was a Feu Duty paid annually. Two of the Landlords, Mr.James McCulloch (landlord 1871-1880's) and Mr. Richard Glen were former employees of Barnbarroch, Mr. McCulloch was a Coachman and Mr. Glen a Gamekeeper.
It would appear that Mr. McCulloch sold the Whaup in July 1889 to Mr. James McCall, suggesting that Mr. Gilpin (landlord 1889-1891) was only letting the premises.
The following appeared in the Free Press dated 11th July 1889.
"Sale Of An Inn,-- The licensed premises at Whauphill, with stable and garden attached, belonging to Mr James McCulloch, and now occupied by Mr. Gilpin, were exposed for sale by public roup in the Courthouse, Wigtown, on Tuesday, and called down to Mr. James McCall, Monreith Arms Hotel, Portwilliam, at the price of £470, being a little over the upset price". ...
